She mouths the psalm,
that elastic lullaby.
See how her eyes don't wince.
See how her smile don't flinch.
She does not depend
on a God of any side,
save for his little songs
that lay her down.
Down to the wooden floor,
amongst the pews stillborn.
She lolls there,
practicing for her grave.
You know she feels light again.
Lighter than she's ever been.
Eaten up by a thousand
2x2's.
She comes to you
but she does not
speak a word.
She don't look you
in the eye.
She look you straight
in the shoe.
Hopes you defend
her for betraying you,
because the sun is out,
and the wind is weak.
Now back to the wooden floor.
The bust with the thorns adorn.
The symbols are so obvious to you now.
She needed that sacrifice
to heave that ton of rice
to understand the ending to that book.
She mouths the psalm
in her happy place.
